completed lace ghost diy project

Spooky season is in full swing and for me, this means a lot of DIY projects! Between family costumes (we’re doing Alice in Wonderland this year!), fall kids crafts and decorating it ends up being a ton of fun! Each year I try to add a few special homemade touches to my seasonal decor. This year I’ve seen those adorable cheesecloth ghosts floating around and while I do love them, I thought I could take it to the next level without much more effort by swapping out the materials. My mom is an avid collector of pretty much anything vintage, dainty and sweet so I asked her for some help with the fabric and boy did she deliver! Read on to find out how to make this adorably whimsical Halloween ghosts craft for this spooky season!

For this project you will need:

  • mod podge
  • lace fabric (see note below)
  • plastic balls
  • toilet paper roll
  • large paint brush
  • black marker

Note: This is an awesome project to do with what you have around the house. I personally spent zero dollars on it by using what I had! If you have an old lace garment, a tablecloth or curtains, all of those would work really well! Additionally, I happened to have balls from my daughter’s ball pit and a bunch of toilet paper rolls to help with the form, but there are tons of other ways you could do this without them! Off the top of my head I could see plastic cups turned upside down or even tin foil molded in to a form working well! The process otherwise would be the same.

How to make Lace Ghosts:

First, Set up your forms. For me that meant putting my plastic balls on top of my toilet paper rolls to create a ghost like shape. I cut open a plastic bag to put them on because this craft does get a little messy.

Next, Make a mod podge and water mixture in a bowl. I used a 1:3 part ratio for this. You want it to be pretty loose so its easy to manipulate right now.

Then, put your lace fabric into the bowl and let it get saturated and wring it out slightly.

After that, Drape your wet lace over your forms and arrange it so that it looks cute. I made some shorter and had more of the fabric trailing off and others just touched the table. You do want some part of it flat on the table though so that it can stand up when its dry.

Once you have your little ghosties all arranged how you like them, you want to make a more dense mod podge mixture. I used the little amount of my watery solution and added more mod podge to it so that it was very sticky but still able to be painted on easily. With this denser mod podge you want to paint the ghosts so that when they dry they are stiff.

The final step after drying is to add little eyes (and mouths if you want!). I made small black circles on paper and cut them out then stuck them on with a little extra mod podge.

That’s it!

The whole process is fairly simple and the hardest part is waiting the few hours it takes for them to dry. But you will be left with these dreamy, dainty little ghosts to sprinkle around your home! I love to use little tea lights under them to make them glow for some extra spooky ambiance! This Halloween ghost craft will certainly some whimsy to your seasonal decor and be useful for years to come! I hope you try them!
