With the leaves changing and a chill in the air, now is the perfect time to get little ones outside for some fun with this kids fall activity! This activity is especially great because it works for kids of all ages. It starts out as a mini art project and it gets them outside and observing their surroundings. I also love that it is low prep and uses recycled materials. Read on to see how you can have a fall fun nature hunt this season!
Create your color coded container
For this project you will need:
- an egg carton
- fall colored paints
- paint brushes
To start this activity, you can prep the egg carton yourself if you’re short on time or don’t want too much of a mess. Additionally, you could have your little ones help with this step! Paint the inside of each section of the egg carton with a different color. You could do a gradient for a cool look rather than a random order but I let my two year old just go wild with it.
Get out there!
Next comes the fun part- get outside! Take your egg carton, ahem, your nature collection carton out with you on a nature walk. With little guys you will likely have to prompt them with a “can you find a yellow leaf?” or “can you find a brown stick”. However, older children will no doubt get the idea quickly and be off and running! Regardless of age, kids will enjoy the hunt!
I love this kids fall activity for its adaptability. Anyone can enjoy it, even adults, I know I personally love color coding things! It requires minimal prep the first time you do it and then you can keep your carton for future nature walks! I also love that this encourages kids to really focus on what they see in nature. It forces them into detective mode and gives them a job which makes for more time outdoors with less complaining in my experience!
Here’s our mostly completed carton! My daughter had a bast with this, I hope you and your kids try this out soon and have a great time!
